ROCKINGHAM, N.C. – Douglas Horne apparently is human after all.  After winning 17 consecutive rounds of racing this year in Top Fuel and Pro Fuel, the 23-year-old from Aberdeen, Md., was beaten Sunday in the final round of the inaugural AHDRA Carolina Spring Nitro Nationals at Rockingham Dragway.

Steve Dorn of Milwaukee, Ore., finally ended Horne’s perfect season, winning the Top Fuel title at The Rock by laying down quick time of the event at 6.297 seconds in the final.  That easily covered Horne’s troubled 6.763.

Despite the loss, Horne left Rockingham as the AHDRA points leader in Top Fuel and as the unbeaten points leader in Pro Fuel, a category in which he has won three straight races this year and four straight dating to 2010.

Other Rockingham winners on Sunday included Johnny Vickers of Millers Creek, N.C., in Pro Drag, Bruce Croneberger of Cressona, Pa., in Pro Modified, Lee Hitz of Annville, Pa., in Pro Gas, and John Marinelli of Debary, Fla., in Pro Stock.  Croneberger was the only double-up winner Sunday, adding the Right Quick Street Pro title to the one he earned in Pro Mod.

Sportsman winners were Donnie Huffman of Lakeland, Fla., in Super Gas, Chris Hoppe of Pennington, N.J., in Super Sport; Jeremy Abbot of Conover, N.C., in Super Eliminator; Greg Best of Raleigh in Screamin’ Eagle SEP; and Brian MacAlister of Yorkville, Ohio, in Screamin’ Eagle Destroyer.

After qualifying only fourth in Top Fuel, Horne got past 2010 series champion Jay Turner of Julian in round one and recorded his quickest time (6.360) to upset No. 1 qualifier Tommy Grimes of Pfafftown in the semifinals.  Nevertheless, he had no answer for Dorn, who made the long trip from the Pacific Northwest pay off.

In Pro Fuel, however, Horne was able to maintain his stranglehold on the points.  After qualifying No. 1, he posted quick time of every round and ultimately stopped Chris Streeter of Cleveland, Ohio, in the final.
