Brainerd, pre-race: Angie Smith has rebounded from the disappointment of not advancing to NHRA’s Countdown to 1 championship playoffs and she’s focusing on improving her performances the rest of the season.
Smith will be driving the same Karl and Kim Klement owned Coffman Tank Trucks V-Twin in this weekend’s Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway. It is the last of 11 Countdown to 10 events and sets the stage for the beginning of the six-race title deciders Sept. 6 at Indianapolis.
“That’s behind us,” she said of her top 10 bid, “and we are moving forward. This will be my last race on the bike I have been riding. We’ve been doing research and development projects on my new V-Twin and I’ll be riding it at Indy. I am excited about that because it was built for me. We are going to test before we go to Indy.
“I’m also looking forward to racing at Brainerd. I was there once, but I haven’t raced there. It would be great if we could win a few rounds on the old bike.”
Smith has qualified for all 10 races in her first year of series competition. She qualified eighth and advanced to the semifinals near Chicago in her best performance thus far.
Matt Smith, her husband and crew chief, is fourth in series points going into this race.
