GT Tonglet didn’t expect a phone call from Matt Smith or an invitation to ride Smith’s new V-Twin motorcycle in its initial NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle race Sunday in Sonoma, but it didn’t take long for him to give a positive response.
“I was pretty surprised,” said Tonglet, who was a regular on the tour until 2007. “I haven’t done much racing lately … just working. The last time I did a Pro Stock race was last October at Las Vegas.”
Tonglet has been assisting his brother, LE, who is a solid rookie of the year candidate with one win and one runner-up finish. He is sixth in points.
“We have a good setup on his bike, and he has been doing really well lately,” GT commented. “We are pretty pumped up about that.”
Tonglet said that it won’t take him long to get up to speed. “I rode Matt’s bike once in 2008, and it was fast. I got it in the show and won one round.”
“He has run some of my bikes before, and we really want to help him out,” Smith said. “He’s never made a six-second run, and one of my goals is to get him into the sixes.” story courtesy NHRA
